Welcome to the Andover Township Police Department web site.

We look forward to bringing the residents of Andover Township and
its surrounding communities an informative and educational website.

Andover Township is located in the southern portion of rural Sussex County.   The police department recently moved across the street from Hillside Park to 145 Lake Iliff Road.   The department is comprised of 12 full-time police officers and 5 full-time 9-1-1 dispatchers.   The police department coverage area is 21.20 square miles with a population of over 6300 people.

The Andover Township Police Department was formed in 1974. Community leaders developed and presented a plan to the elected officials for the formation of a municipal police force. This police force was housed in the basement garage area of the old Andover Township Municipal Building on Newton-Sparta Road. The department was working out of two small offices.

In 1981 as the police department grew and more demands were placed on the departent, the location was changed to the former care-takers residence at the Hillside Park off of Lake Iliff Road. Most of the renovation for this police station were done by many of the police officers. During this time the Andover Township Police Department became a 9-1-1 answering point. The police dispatch was responsible for answering 9-1-1 calls from Andover Boro, Green Township, and eventually Hamburg Boro. This was along with any calls for Andover Township.

In 2002 plans were formulated for a new 9-1-1 communications center and police headquarters. These plans became a reality on February 17, 2003 when the new facility went into operation. The Andover Township Police Department has moved from reactive to proactive. D.A.R.E. is now being taught by members of the Andover Township Police Department.

There are many community oriented programs the department participates in throughout the year. Initiatives in child I.D. kits and participation in the Safety Town program held at Florence M. Burd School demonstrate the Department's desire to be active in community policing. Grants have been applied for to fund traffic safety programs and homeland security initiatives. The members of the Andover Township Police Department remain committed to the service of their community.
